John Radcliffe Hospital - coloured glass windows
The coloured glass window facade at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington, Oxford, was created to thank donors and their families that have helped save other lives through the gift of organ donation.
Designed by architectural glass artist Martin Donlin, Renewal and regeneration were the inspiration for Martin’s design, represented by abstracted images of “forget-me-not” flowers. Martin wanted to incorporate energy with the use bright vibrant colours so Proto Glass Studios sampled the various colours from Martin’s digital artwork and overlaid with subtle delicate etched lines, integrated with the skyline of Oxford. The text “The Gift Of Life” runs throughout the entire design as a message to us all of the importance of organ donation.
Installed for Organ Donation Week, Proto Glass Studios supplied and installed the bespoke coloured glass windows to fit the existing frames.
Glass Specification: 9m x 3.5m area of toughened double glazed units with lifetime guaranteed screen-printed colour windows and various etches.
Techniques used: screenprinted ceramic enamels provide a permanent print that will not scratch off or fade when exposed to UV light. Sandblasting also produced permanent etched lines and text onto the glass.
