The GPO Memorial Glass Sculpture

National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, UK

designed by Peter Naylor - sculptor

This screen printed glass sculpture was commissioned in remembrance of the 12,830 GPO men and women who gave their lives in the World Wars 1914-18 & 1939-45. The photos are from the general post office historic collection and depict the lives of those serving during these times. Designed by Peter Naylor, the 19 panels are each 2m high and carefully designed to sit in one continuous faceted panoramic 'wall'. Visitors can weave in and out of this impressive sculpture and learn much about the day to day lives of those who served.

Glass Specification:
Each panel is made from 25.5mm laminated and toughened glass with a permanent screen-printed black and etched ceramic print. The glass is encased by a seemless stainless steel rounded capping and glazed into a bespoke underground bolted metal channel. The glass was calculated for specific wind loading and meets all CE standards.

Techniques used:
screenprinted ceramic frit provides a permanent print that will not scratch off or fade externally when exposed to UV light.

I was recommended Proto Glass Studios by various glass artists and delighted to work with them. They made every stage of the works straight forward and delivered a quality sculpture on time and on budget.
